SUMMARY OF DUTIES
To take an active role in the education and training of assigned student as mandated through Individual Education Plan (IEP) objectives, within the classroom and in the community. You may be assigned to work with other students in the classroom or another classroom as needed.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
Reports directly to the classroom Teacher.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supports student learning. The Direct Support Professional / Classroom Aide assists the teacher with reinforcing academic goals.
- Understanding Instructional Goals and other plans specific to a student. The Direct Support Professional / Classroom Aide will have an understanding and knowledge of students’ instructional goals and assist with monitoring student progress as outlined by the classroom teacher.
- Develops a positive relationship with students. The Direct Support Professional / Classroom Aide will consistently utilize proactive strategies when interacting with students.
- Accepts Supervision. The Direct Support Professional / Classroom Aide will follow all verbal and written instructions given by the classroom supervisor, respond well to constructive criticism and make improvements when needed. He/ she will demonstrate a willingness to make changes, such as working in another classroom or with another student. The Direct Support Professional / Classroom Aide will participate in gym, swim, and related services areas, supporting the student and reinforcing Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals as developed by specific instructors. Maintain communication between specials and the classroom while supporting carryover of skills.
- Supports a classroom of Excellence. The Direct Support Professional / Classroom Aide is expected to handle difficult situations in a mature, professional manner and remain flexible and positive when working around planned or unplanned events. He/ she will use time productively. Relationships with colleagues are cordial and professional.
- Staff Development. The Direct Support Professional / Classroom Aide will attend all mandatory in-services and training sessions and participate in professional development activities that contribute to the profession. In addition, staff must maintain current certification in Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention – Revised (SCIP-R) and CPR.
- Documentation of paperwork. The Direct Support Professional / Classroom Aide will complete documentation, daily tracking and other paperwork accurately, in a timely manner and with minimal assistance.
- Knowledge of Agency Policies and Procedures. The Direct Support Professional / Classroom Aide needs to read and understand job-related Agency policies and procedures, including emergency situations. When in doubt, the Direct Support Professional / Classroom Aide should ask questions of their supervisor for clarification or direction.
- Confidentiality. Ethical standards of confidentiality regarding student information must be maintained both within and outside of the Agency/ school.
- Communication. All communications with parents/ guardians/ service coordinators or others must be done under the direct supervision of the teacher or school administrator.
- Physical agility and ability to react to emergency situations, including Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention – Revised (SCIP-R) certification as per regulatory guidelines.
- Certification in CPR.
- Follows all agency policies and procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Ability to meet physical requirements of the position when performing the following: standing, walking, sitting, grasping, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling and climbing.
- Ability to move, reposition, lift and transfer individuals as required by prescribed program/plan.
- Valid New York State Driver’s License.
